Dance Auditions for Goliath Groupers have begun…

Every year around late summer, something starts happening to the Goliath Groupers. It begins slowly in August, and builds throughout the month. Like the TV show “So you think you can Dance”, they begin “massing” in a few “special” places in Palm Beach. They have this feeling that drives them, each year….It’s genetic, its evolutionary…They are drawn together in an attempt to find the right mate..or mates, and apparently they like the big parties.

The sites for these Goliath Grouper Aggregations are limited to a handful we know of….among the best in the Western Hemisphere, is the “Shipwreck of the Castor” in Boynton, and the “wreck of the Mispah” off Singer Island. In a single dive, it is possible to see more than 50 of these monster sized Goliath Groupers, lazing around the shipwreck, or trying to get lucky.

This aggregation or “massing” behavior may have led to their near extinction in the 70’s and 80’s, due to the ease with which the commercial fisherman were able to harvest or butcher large numbers of the breeding population in a very short time period. Fortunately, the Goliath Groupers are protected today. Today, this massing behavior allows scuba divers to get an incredible view of enormous marine life, almost like a trip “back in time”.

Diving with the Goliath Groupers can mean some very cool interaction, if the diver and the Goliath are both in the mood for it. All you have to do is plan the trip to Palm Beach, and figure out which of your buddies needs to do this dive with you.

We have some special “Goliath” Savings for you in Palm Beach right now….the Hilton on Singer Island, is doing a $99 per night special for divers visiting the wreck of the Mispah, and for those that want to dive the wreck of the Castor, The Delray Beach Marriott has a $120 special price for it’s incredible 4 star luxury and optimal Dive Resort amenities.

Visit the Find a Hotel Page to reach either property, and the Find a Boat section will show you which dive boats work the Mispah (a Palm Beach Inlet area dive) or the Castor ( a dive site best enjoyed by boats running out of Boynton Beach).

Your “window” for this trip, is from NOW, to late September or early October, if you want to see the Aggregation in full swing.
