"Many years ago I attended a Turtle symposium, where a noted scientist was telling everyone that sea turtles could hold their breath for about 20 to 30 minutes. I stood right up and let them know that we would find Roger soudn asleep, clean him for 50 minutes, then he would swim back into his ledge after we finished and go back to sleep. I knew turtles could hold their breath for many hours, just from the encounters we would have in an afternoon on a single reef. We'd see the turtles if they surfaced, so we got a better feel for how long they usually stayed under. Today we know a turtle can stay under for as long as three days if they need to."

"Another relationship I've seen is at cleaner stations. The turtle will lie down on the bottom and place his fins at outward 45 degree angles. This lets fish like the spanish hogfish know the turtle wants to be cleaned. Of course, this is another instance of a species of fish which depends on the turtles for a portion of its diet. "Many times I've had turtles I know swim up to me and beg to be cleaned. The body language is so obvious anyone watching could easily understand this.

"Sometimes we'd see them foraging for food. Following closely you'd see angel fish, which were able to eat broken up sponge pieces in the wake of turtle feeding, as well as the little creatures hiding within the sponge. Without the turtle, this food would not have been available to the anglefish. I believe there are many other forms of marine life similarly affected by sea turtle activities, and our saving of the sea turtle will ultimately help maintain the harmony remaining in the ocean."

"And sometimes they will even play with me, as in the photo here of Robert where I "asked" him to pose with the regulator in his mouth, and he was happy to oblige".
