Nudibranchs
at the Bridge ...Underview

Each of these nudibranchs had to be tracked, and hunted. Masters of camouflage, and often the size of a grain of rice, these creatures compel macro photographers to the BHB daily. Their story is as strange as their appearance. In the family of snails, and without shells, they eat toxic and poisonous prey, and then generate a “Toxic Defense System” Blue Heron Bridge Marine Parkfrom the prey. They are often found eating hydroids in this marine park. You may remember the discomfort of hydroid stings, when not wearing protective gear over exposed skin. Imagine, being able to convert the stinging of the hydroids for your own defense! So how do you find a needle in a haystack,

Blue Heron Bridge Marine Park

or harder still, a well concealed nudibranch in it’s natural element? The best trackers and hunters we know, first learn the eating and hunting habits of the nudibranchs, and begin their search by scanning the bottom for accumulations of algae and hydroids. Too much algae and substrate to hide in, and there will be no good way to get good shots of them through all the “tropical foliage” . You have

Blue Heron Bridge Marine Parkto hunt them where they are drawn out a little into the open....Certain areas at the BHB Marine Park are like African Savannahs ...large expanses of sand and shells ( like the grasslands) with intermittent outcroppings of algae, seagrasses, and hydroids ( the BHB version of a “discontinuous cover of trees). The smart “out of town photographers” hire a professional Nudibranch Hunter, and soon find themselves following their guide over some of the most unlikely underwater terrain many divers have ever been exposed to, and once in position at a major feeding site, the divers feel more like Navy SEALS, stealthily moving along with Lembeh sticks, maintaining horizontal trim without silting, right at the bottom....

Blue Heron Bridge Marine ParkYou can venture out yourself with no guide--unlike the African Savannah, but the uniqueness of this ecosystem leaves most photographers at a loss to know where to look for the best pictures. One of the best Guides SFDJ can recommend is Ariane Dimitris (reach her at escherandme2001@yahoo. com) . If she is not available, email us at dan@sfdj.com ,
