Blue Heron Bridge Marine ParkEven with a professional Nudibranch hunter helping you, awareness of “what” you need to be looking at is critical. If you were searching for lobsters, it would help to know they tend to hide in ledges with their antennae often visible.... but you need to know what the structure looks like they would be found in. This is far more critical still with the Nudibranchs. While looking at the Nudibranchs in this article, go back to the beginning, and look at the structure and texture of the background each Nudibranch sits on. Look for places you would find the food they like, such as Hydroids...

In the 2 shots at left, the more distant shot shows the texture of the bottom. Tiny little shells and pebble-like mini-boulders litter the “trail” this creature wanders along. As you begin to look for the small shells and algaes that you can find in many of these shots, it will become much easier to actually see the nudibranch when it is pointed

Blue Heron Bridge Marine Parkout by the guide. Without having a sense of how these creatures “fit” into the texture of the bottom they frequent, just having a guide point at nudibranchs you come to may not be enough for you--you may look, but not see. When one is pointed out, you need to get down flat to the bottom ( without silting!!), get still and calm, and wait for your eyes to be able to focus down and pick out the shapes in the tiny textures...Suddenly you will see one, and from there on, it should become easier!
