Sometimes we find travelers wandering through this dessert of sand. Visitors like this Hermit Crab bring a home with them wherever they go, but will readily discard it and commandeer a better one if the opportunity arises. |
Some of the other residents consider their homes a part of themselves(they are), and if they have left home it means an octopus or other mollusk predator has recently dined with them! This King Helmet was about 9 inches long. One of many large shells you can discover in the sand. |
The Mantis Shrimp is the largest shrimp in Florida. They burrow in flat sand bottoms and can be quite aggressive. Divers trying to touch one can suffer painful gashes from the powerful claws of the Mantis Shrimp. |
