I remember how upset the big net fishermen used to get when the jewfish would get into their nets and tear them up into pieces while getting out of them. They were so big. They could just swim into the nets, eat what they wanted, and just pick any part of the net they wanted to leave through, and the net would'nt stand a chance of holding them. So the net fisherman and the lobster fisherman (who blamed the jewfish for lower lobster harvests) began the extermination of the jewfish. They considered them some kind of vermin. I'd say it "takes one to know one", except the jewfish really were beautiful creatures, nothing like the men who slaughtered them. And today they are virtually extinct in these waters." |
