Nestled in somewhat protected areas on top of the reef you'll find octo-corals of many types. Most people know them as gorgonians , sea fans or whips, or soft corals. What makes them similar is the number of tentacles around their central mouth (eight, therefore "octo" coral). One of the best ways for macro photographers to get good octocoral shots is in the feet up - head down position shown here. This student is preparing to make a picture of a sea whip (a type of gorgonian/octocoral/soft coral).
This is what octocorals look like during the day when their tentacles are out for feeding, and a closer look from which you can count the number of tentacles around each coral's mouth.
